And yes Sherwood Forest does exist... There are over 500 Oak trees in Sherwood Forest that are over 900 years old. The Major Oak is the most famous one of them all because of the legend of Robin Hood. However, the tree isn't old enough, and would not have been around when Robin was supposed to be...

I have a bunch more photos to post of old Oaks, but I can't get photobucket to save them when I rotate them...

Not anymore they don't. They did when I was a kid though :D There used to be a photo of me up in the branches when I was about 4 or 5... That vanished with all the other photos of me as a child when my mum died...

how often do they have to support the trees? or is this rare? or just to make it grow a certain way?

The Major Oak is the only one they support. The thing is alive, but it is hollow in the middle. The story has it that Robin Hood used to hide in this tree from the Sheriff of Nottingham. The tree is famous throughout the UK and Europe. People come from all around the world to see it. So to stop it from splitting, or from toppling over and hurting someone, they have supports for the bigger limbs.

When I was a kid you used to be able to climb the thing and go inside it. Mind, that was 30 years ago...
