Oak, flash, and thorn
[crossposted from cottage renovations 15_the_circle]
this tree is located in an open field to the East of the Grove.
the tract in which it is located is slated for development and all the site plans I've seen show the spot where it stands as cleared and built upon.

its best hope is for the housing sector to remain in the tank, but even that will provide only a temporary stay of execution.
even so, a short term is better than none and we will continue to appreciate it for however long it may remain.
if there's one thing we have learned so far, it's that the building industry is not responsive to petitions.
this tract is wooded in some sections and has several fields. though it does not lie within our boundaries our town has been engaged for years in discussions with a series of developers about what is to come.
from their perspective it's all about the density and we have never obtained so much as a single buildable lot worth of concession in that regard.
the best we have been able to obtain -- and it has come after phenomenal amounts of volunteer hours as well as a considerable legal expense in our municipal budget (and, as a result, a certain level of acrimony within the Town over the expense) -- has been for a part of one of the fields to be set aside as a legacy open space preserve.
this tree, unfortunately, is not in that section.
even the preservation is not absolutely guaranteed and we are currently in litigation in an effort to secure its protection.
wish us luck!
Have you thought about chaining someone to the tree..? If nothing else it will get publicity.
